Introduction to baby massage techniques
Jan 7th 2009
Techniques are based on a combination of Swedish massage, Indian massage, reflexology and yoga. Prior to becoming a baby massage instructor I trained in Swedish body massage, Indian head massage and reflexology. Baby massage has a wonderful holisitic approach to all these areas.
A routine of strokes across the stomach work wonders at relieving the pain caused by colic and trapped wind. Both of my sons suffered terribly with trapped wind and I found that the only way to relieve their agony (and my sleepless nights!) was with baby massage. It is important to always work in the clockwise direction of the intestines to help the natural flow.
Baby massage can even help to relieve blocked noses. A simple massage down the bridge of the nose towards the cheek bones can help drain the stuffy congestion made worse by not being able to blow their noses yet. Another hot tip is to rub down the outside of the thumb or the big toe. This is a reflexology stroke based on the principle that this area of the hand or foot represents the sinuses. If you are sceptical, try it on yourself and you will feel your sinuses draining clear!
